Deviated Septum Laser Surgery| The Future of Deviated Septum Surgery?
In this article I will be giving information on deviated septum laser surgery.
A deviated septum is a medical condition, where your nasal septum will get deviated either due to trauma or other reasons. This shift from the central midline based on severity will cause various problems such as:
- Nose bleeds
- Recurring sinus infections
- Severe nasal congestion
If you visit an ENT specialist, the doctor will advise you to undergo septoplasty. This is a surgical cure and the only permanent treatment option available for this condition till a few years ago.
Laser Treatment for a Deviated Septum
Today based on the severity of your deviation another treatment in the form of laser surgery exists. Deviated septum laser surgery involves the use of high powered lasers to heat the deviated part of the septum. Since this tissue is only “soft tissue” due to the high temperatures produced by the laser, it will become softer and increasingly malleable.
After a few minutes of exposure to the laser, the abnormalities or deviation in the soft tissue will be flattened or shaped in a way to clear the nasal air passageway. Thus you will be able to breathe freely.
Advantages of Deviated Septum Laser Surgery
- Faster recovery time
- Lesser pain
- Only local anaesthesia required
- In a few cases, there was relapse and the abnormalities reoccurred.
- Treatment is still now available in most hospitals
Disadvantages of Deviated Septum Laser Surgery
While this surgery has not gained widespread acceptance, it is a option worth looking into because of the many advantages it offers over traditional surgery. Make sure to ask your doctor if you are eligible for this treatment. If not now, then in a few years after research is done on the issue, deviated septum laser surgery may gain widespread recognition.
