What is a deviated septum? I’ve never had any trauma to my nose; why do I have it?

The septum is in the middle of your nose and is made of bone and cartilage.  It provides structure and support to your nose.  Without it, the nose would collapse into the face.  You may have been born with a deviated septum, and sometimes over time, with growth to adulthood, the septum can become deviated.  If you’ve been hit or punched in the nose, your septum may become deviated.
