It is very normal for patients to undergo post operative discomforts from any type of surgical rhinoplasty. May it be open rhinoplasty, closed rhinoplasty, augmentation rhinoplasty, autologous cartilage graft rhinoplasty, etc. However, it is quite unusual if discomforts will occur post non-surgical rhinoplasty, when in fact, patients after their appointments from non-surgical rhinoplasty can instantly return and do their activities of daily living. Not all patients feel the same exact discomforts post operatively, since each person has its own perception, tolerance, and threshold of pain and discomfort.
Pain Post Rhinoplasty
Pain is the most common after effect or discomfort after rhinoplasty. Pain is usually associated with the bruising and swelling of the surgical site and the surrounding tissues. Pain post rhinoplasty is usually managed with pain medications, such as mefenamic acid. Aside from pain medications, diversional activities (watching tv, listening to music, etc.) will be recommended to help in decreasing perception of pain. Management to reduce swelling and bruising are also done to effectively get reduce the pain.
Swelling and Bruising Post Rhinoplasty
Swelling and bruising after undergoing rhinoplasty surgey will normally peak 2 to 3 days after the surgery. Normally, if the patient is in good health, swelling and bruising will completely heal within a couple of weeks. Applying gentle cold compress to the swelling and bruised area can help in relieving both post rhinoplasty discomforts.
Numbness and Stiffness Post Rhinoplasty
Numbness and stiffness the nose will be normal after rhinoplasty. However, stiffness may be permanent, while numbness will usually be completely gone after several months post rhinoplasty. Stiffness of the nose is nothing to be alarmed of. Stiffness is normal due to the alterations and nose implants inserted into the nose for the patient to achieve a more aesthetically better nose appearance.
Bleeding Post Rhinoplasty
Bleeding post rhinoplasty is normal for the first few days. Patients are advised NEVER to blow their nose after rhinoplasty, for at least 1 week. Blowing the nose will just increase the pressure and blood flow to the nose, which can cause aggravation of bleeding. Aside from blowing the nose, the patient is also asked not to bend down or stoop down and lift heavy objects, as these activities will also aggravate or cause bleeding problems to the surgical site. If bleeding is heavy, you should contact your surgeon right away, because, heavy bleeding will never be normal in any case. Nasal packing will be placed on the nose after surgery to act as a blood absorbent and as a splint at the same time. The surgeon will be the only one to remove the nasal packing.
