Augmentation Rhinoplasty

Augmentation rhinoplasty is not one of the 3 major types of rhinoplasty, but it is considered to be a subtype of closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. In performing the surgical procedure augmentation rhinoplasty, the surgeon has 2 options on how he or she wants to perform it, either closed rhinoplasty or open rhinoplasty. For how the augmentation rhinoplasty will  be performed, the surgeon will have to talk based it on the effect of the nose job the patient specifically wants to achieve.

What is Augmentation Rhinoplasty?

Before and After Augmentation Rhinoplasty

From the word “augment”, meaning to increase the size, augmentation rhinoplasty is a nose job that specifically done to increase the size of certain regions or parts of a patient’s nose, for the nose to look better, aesthetically speaking. Usually, augmentation rhinoplasty is done to add height to the bridge of the nose or surgically change the patient’s tip of the nose to make it look taller and better. Unlike non-surgical rhinoplasty that can be performed using only local anesthetics, augmentation rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia.

Closed Rhinoplasty: Augmentation Rhinoplasty

During closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are not made outside or the external portions of the nose, instead, incisions are made through the nostrils. In closed rhinoplasty, the surgeon performing the augmentation rhinoplasty has limited access to certain areas of the internals of the nose and limited visibility. However, what makes closed rhinoplasty beneficial is that it saves the patient from having any visible scars on the nose’s skin, unlike in open rhinoplsaty. Aside from lesser scars, closed rhinoplasty will take lesser healing time, since incisions are only done inside the nose and sparing the nose’s skin from any incisions.

Open Rhinoplasty: Augmentation Rhinoplasty

If closed rhinoplasty does not involve any incisions made outside the nose only incisions done on the nostrils, open rhinoplasty is quite the opposite of closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty’s incisions are directly made on the external portion or the skin of the nose. However, even if incisions are made on the visible areas of the nose, the surgeon will have greater access and visibility to the internal structures of the nose, such as the bones and the cartilages of the nose, which makes it easier for the surgeon to do any augmentation and alterations to the nose’s appearance. The surgical procedure, open rhinoplasty, takes a longer time to be performed and get done, compared to closed rhinoplasty. Aside from the time it will take for the surgical procedure to get done, open rhinoplasty will also take a longer time to heal.
