A deviated septum is a medical condition wherein your septum will shift from its midline. This will make your nostrils unequal i.e. small on one side. Almost 80% of all people suffer from some sort of a deviated septum. Based on the amount of deviation your deviated septum will be classified into 3 types, the treatment for the three are different.
Types of Deviated Septum
As stated above, your deviated septum can be classified into 3 types based on severity.
- Minor Deviated Septum: Most people suffer from this type of a deviated septum. Here the deviation will be very minor and you will have none of the symptoms which normally occur due to a deviated septum.
- Moderate Deviated Septum: If your septum is a little more deviated, then it will be classified under the moderate deviated septum category. Here you will suffer from a few of the symptoms and you may have to undergo surgery for a cure.
- Sever Deviated Septum: In few extremely rare cases your septum may be severely deviated. In such cases you will encounter all of the symptoms of this medical condition. Additionally the only permanent cure for this condition is surgery i.e. septoplasty.
Symptoms Usually Found due to a Deviated Septum
The symptoms you will normally notice due to a deviated septum are:
- Extreme nasal congestion
- Recurring sinus infection
Minor Deviated Septum Treatment- Is it Necessary?
If you only suffer from a minor deviated septum then there is absolutely no need for you to undergo surgery or treatment of any kind. Most people with a minor deviated septum do not suffer from any of the above symptoms. At maximum you will suffer from the nasal congestion, for which many non-surgical cures such as a nose spray are available.
If your septum is deviated in a minor manner, do not waste your time or money on surgery. Undergo the surgery only if really necessary and your doctor truly advices it. Otherwise save yourself some pain, money and time.
